Go For It!

I was reading about a young boy called Tommy earlier this week. Tommy was deemed very slow by his teachers and his mum was always being called by the school. The repeated report was that Tommy was incapable and had problems catching up with his mates. His ability to retain information was also queried because the teachers said he asked too many questions. After much complaint by the school, mum had to withdraw Tommy from school and started homeschooling him. She kept letting him know how great he was and how he could achieve anything he wanted. That child, under his mum’s encouragement and nurturing became the great Thomas Edison who was one of the world’s greatest inventors. Mum said go for it and Tommy did!

As I thought of Thomas Edison’s story, I remembered my childhood. I come from a home where my parents (particularly my dad) believe in us and ensure we know it. I grew up hearing him say, ‘if you have a dream, just go get it; I’ll support you all the way!’ Today, I’ll share with you one of such stories of his support.

After my secondary school education, I did a few entrance examinations which I passed and was awaiting the end of summer to start higher education. In the interim, I wanted to try to interview for a vacation job because I had never done one before. My dad found out about an accounting administrator role within a huge government sector and encouraged me to apply for the role. I did not think I qualified for the role but remembered my dad saying , “ well, apply and let’s see what happens. You can only try. Do your best and see what happens.”

I did, got past the three stages and got to the final section which was a panel interview. As I faced the panel, I was asked a series of questions and informed straight away that they wanted to offer me a job if I would be happy to not go for my studies but start working immediately for them. I was also informed that over 200 people applied for the role and I was their preferred person!  I was delighted but I rejected the job offer and and went studying. I however got the invaluable experience of multi stage interviews as well as increased confidence in knowing that I could achieve a goal, no matter how unreachable it seemed.

Caleb, a gentleman in the bible was another person to learn from when it comes to going for great things irrespective of your circumstances. He was old, but there were promises God had given his people and he wanted to experience and enjoy the promises. He never let age nor obstacles limit him. He said to Joshua,

“So give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said.” Joshua 14:12

Like Caleb stated, you need to know that when God gives you a promise, He will be with you and empower you to GO GET IT! But you’ve got to believe you can, go for it and keep at it until you achieve your dream.

Nothing you want in life comes on a platter of gold. Promises are to be contended for because nothing of value ever gets delivered without working hard for it.  Be assured however that as you go for your goals/ promises this year, you won’t need to fight for it alone because God has promised and He will be with you as you go for your goals.

So my word of advise to you today is simple.. just like Caleb, GO get it.

God is on your side!

Two clues to finding your passion

Eddie: Hello, and welcome to Mentoring Platform. My name is Eddie.

Bola: And my name is Bola

Eddie: Alright. Well this is our first time this year of doing this.

Bola: Yeah Happy New Year!

Eddie: Happy New Year. Happy New Year. And I think today, very briefly, we want to talk about your focus this year.

Bola: Yeah.

Eddie: And one of the things we want to focus on this year is your passion. We want you to find an area of interest. Alright?

Bola: Yup.

Eddie: I think, right now I’m currently working with a group of people, helping them find, I’m helping them to find their area of passion and see how they can save their world on that platform. And then also create, see how they can actually earn an income from that passion, and do it full time. So I think it’s good when you function in the area of your passion. When you do things that you really, really love. And I think that’s one area I will love you, I will love you, to work on this year.

Bola: Yeah. We’ve come to realise a lot of people don’t even know what they are good at. They don’t know what their passion area is. Maybe because all your life you’ve been told what to do. Or you’ve had to work on that necessity. Or on that leader that tells you to do things in a particular way. Or mum and dad want you to do things in a certain way. But whatever it is, many of us have either lost it or have never found what we are good at and it’s so, so easy to find. Eddie, what are the ways?

Eddie: Yeah. Well I think it’s very, if anything else, this should be your New Years resolution this year. In other words, I found my purpose in life. I found my passion. And I’m walking in it. And I’m being blessed doing it. And not only that, I’m being a blessing to my community doing that. So one of the ways you can look at this is to ask yourself, “What exactly do I really, really enjoy doing?” What do you love doing?
If I wake you at three a.m. in the morning, right? What will you talk about? If I pulled together 2000 people in a room, and I come to you and I say “2000 people are in a room somewhere, or in a hall somewhere, that wants you to come in and teach them anything, what will you teach them for an hour?” Alright? So I think that’s one good place to start from.

Bola: It’s a very good place to start from. The second one is, just in case you’re not made for it, no matter how tired you are, no matter how exhausted you are, what extra thing will you do that you’re not being paid for. Nobody’s gonna pay for it, but you just find it in yourself to do it anyway, because you love doing it. That one more thing you would do before going to bed. What will it be for you?
So look at those, cause I know when you were younger, what did people used to say you were really good at? What did you used to love doing when there would be no interruptions of life or challenges of life, what did you love doing then? What did people say you were good at doing?

Eddie: Well I figure this are those two-

Bola: Little pointers.

Eddie: Yeah. You need to start from. But whatever you do, identify this year. Okay? Because at the end of the day when you are 70, 80, 90 years old, your gonna look back and one of the things your gonna ask yourself is “Did I really do what I enjoy doing?” So throughout this year, we want you to work with us as much as possible. We want to bring this message across to you, find your voice. Find your heart. And live for purpose. Alright.

Bola: Alright.

Eddie: That’s it from us here at Mentoring Platform. Once again, Happy New Year, and we’re gonna be talking through all these issues throughout this year at one point or the other. So have a great day and God bless.

Bola: Bye.

You Can Do It!

I am currently reading a book that has emphasised one of the principles Eddie and I believe in and practise as much as we can. That is; “ encouragement aids achievements.”

The book, How to Influence People: Make a difference in your world by John Maxwell states that

“ Most people receive more than their share of negative comments and criticism from others—so much that they sometimes begin to lose sight of their value. There is a telling example of this in A Touch of Wonder by Arthur Gordon. He relates the story of a friend who belonged to a club at the University of Wisconsin. It was comprised of several bright young men who had genuine talent for writing. Each time they met, one of the men would read a story or essay he had written, and the rest of the group would dissect and criticize it. The viciousness of their comments prompted them to call themselves the Stranglers. On the same campus, some women formed a group, and they called themselves the Wranglers. They also read their manuscripts to one another, but instead of showering criticism on one another, they tried to find positive things to say. Every member was given encouragement, no matter how weak or undeveloped her writing was.

The results of the two groups’ activities came to light twenty years later when the careers of the classmates were examined. Of the talented young men in the Stranglers, not one of them had made a name for himself as a writer. But half a dozen successful writers emerged from the Wranglers, even though they had not necessarily shown greater promise. And some of the women had gained national prominence, such as Pulitzer prize–winner Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. For most people, it’s not what they are that holds them back. It’s what they think they’re not.”

As shown above, encouragement led to achievement within the women group. In life, everyone needs a cheerleader. That person that spurs you on no matter what. They help you believe you can take on anything and still excel. In addition to these God sent encouragers, there is also the word of God, which is designed to help you achieve!

The word of God is full of encouragements and words of promise for us to read, meditate on, believe and become. The more we behold the word of God that is positively set to lift us, the more we become and achieve greatness. For example, Gods word says

“For I hold you by your right hand–I, the LORD your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.” Isaiah 41:13

The above bible verse makes it clear that whenever we are going through a new phase, or a challenging time or any circumstance in life, God assures is that He is interested enough to be present, hold our hands; reassure us not to be afraid and then Help us!

This new year, many of us have great and somewhat scary goals sometimes, but be rest assured that you’ve got a Cheerleader here who will always spur you on, not only with my words, but also with the tool of the word of God. All your dreams for the year are achievable and God will help you; so do not be afraid.

My word of encouragement to you today is, believe in yourself, believe in Gods presence and help, start working on those goals, one at a time and you’ll achieve them all because God is on your side!
