ARE YOU A ZEBRA?

ARE YOU A ZEBRA?

My brother in law told me about an occurrence a few years ago which I found both inspiring and extremely funny.

My brother in law lives and works in Lagos Nigeria. He went on his lunch break with a few colleagues, they needed to walk across a busy road with a zebra crossing and after waiting a while, a lady in his company decided to step forward into the lanes on the zebra crossing. The first set of cars stopped whereas the other lane had a mini van speeding along. The driver of the mini van looked determined to progress despite the lady being right there on the road, at the zebra crossing.

Perplexed and yet determined, the lady stayed on but slowly moved forward, as the mini van driver got to her, he slowed down slightly. And she being irritated decided to tell him off. She went ‘didn’t you see me? This is a zebra crossing’. To which the mini van driver responded without delay..’are you a zebra? I didn’t think you are as you don’t look like one’. The lady was shocked! But the whole team around burst into laughter. Myself and the other occupants in the car equally found the exchange very funny.

In all honesty, as a kid, I used to wonder why they called it a zebra crossing when I had never seen any zebra in the city before! Thankfully, unlike the mini van driver, I found out what the sign stood for before I started driving and I obey the traffic rules on zebra crossings.

The story of this misinterpretation of a signal or a situation led me to think of the danger of an ill-educated Christian who may continue to go around with the label, yet does not know their rights and responsibilities sometimes. The word of God admonishes us to study to know and use.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” 2 Tim 2:15

Knowing and living the truth gives you a level of security, confidence and strength that ignorance takes away from you. The driver has been on those roads for years, yet didn’t know (or chose not to) or observe the law. In a different setting, he could have been penalised and punished for that action of not stopping at the zebra crossing; irrespective of his interpretation.

Always remember that knowledge empowers and delivers results into our hands.

WHAT’S NEW?

WHAT’S NEW?

Moving forward and experiencing new things is a strong desire for every human being and I thought to share my experience with our son along these lines with you.

Our son doesn’t live at home anymore but still comes to our church: so we tend to see him every sunday after the services. After each service when we see Asher, we go; ‘Asher, what’s new?’ Though he says there’s nothing to report, I notice that our conversations still go on for a while when he is updating us on all the new things in his life.

He has loads of new things happening for him and always asks for the new things in our lives – when we now start recounting all the happenings of the week, we see that there have been many new things in our own lives within a week as well.

Whenever we choose to give attention to it, there are so many new things that happen in our lives on a daily basis and God does so many new things in our lives if only we give close attention to them.

Little wonder He says to us;

‘Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.’ Isaiah 43:19

Just as we love new things, God does new things in our lives and if we give attention to them we will see Him making a way for us in the wildernesses of life as well as showing us how to find rivers and provision in the deserts of life.

New things are here, look closely out for them, embrace them and record them so you can share the testimony with many others.

God is on your side!

AND THE WINNER IS…!

AND THE WINNER IS…!

Just as it is with the OSCARS, it’s nomination season in my local gym and as I walked into the class today, my trainer started out by reminding us all of that. She then said something that got me thinking and brought the thought of this message to mind.

She said she had written her acceptance speech for a few years and she still hasn’t had any nominations for any of the awards. She then mentioned that another one of the instructors wins the nomination almost every year and that by now the award receiving instructor must be tired of her yearly recognition. Some other trainees in the class then laughed at my instructor, asking if she was jealous of the fact that she never receives any award but the other lady gets awards repeatedly.

My instructor mentioned that she does not feel jealous but she is happy for the instructor that gets the awards, though feels down once in a while that she hasn’t won any. As I examined the gracious nature of my instructor, I asked myself if I would feel that relaxed about the issue if I worked in a place and never get recognised year in year out, particularly if I worked hard enough too and have expected to be recognised and even prepared my speech!

Someone in class then said jokingly, ‘I wonder if you’ll still be ready with your speech on the day you will get called out. You might have given up and not brought the speech to the awards night or not even attend at all.’ Wow I thought, after waiting for something for a while and not getting it, it is possible to be missing on the day of the reward/recognition; now that is scary.

The bible warned us about this saying

‘Let us not be weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’ Galatians 6:9

Weariness can set in for any one of us if we have been waiting for something for a long period of time and we have repeatedly been disappointed. I will however want to keep admonishing you to not give up but to continue waiting because at the appropriate time you will be recognised and rewarded if you’re still waiting.

Whatever happens, keep your acceptance speech handy as the day of recognition might come sooner than you think!

MEET MY OLD NEW FRIENDS!

MEET MY OLD NEW FRIENDS!

These last few days have seen me in the company of over 45 people, most of whom I thought I knew, but just discovered that I never knew well enough. Spending an average of 15 hours a day with the team we went to Israel with has been a great eye opener for me.

If asked if I knew these people prior to this week, I would definitely have said yes; but the last few days of spending more time together and bonding made me know that I surely didn’t know a lot of them well enough.

As we sit together eating, travelling, chatting, exercising (yes! Gym time together too!!) , sharing stories and experiencing God in the Holy land, I learnt more about stories of individuals as well as discovered their personalities. I discovered that these people are genuinely loving, lovely and happy!

I just came to know some after so many years of just seeing them regularly and in all genuineness; what I have discovered about everyone is good!

My relating with my old new friends taught me the lesson I want to share today and that is that – we need to invest time with one another to really get to know each other.

God’s word says;

‘Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.’ Romans 13:8

As the team do the essentials as well as the non essentials together, I can see so much love and fondness – what a group of people! Everyone genuinely shows so much love one to the other and I am super proud to be a part of this team and family.

I actually thought I was the only one who noticed this until a couple of other people told me how great this team of friends are. What a joy to meet my old new friends again in this new place.

My admonition to you today is to make time out to get to know the people (treasures) all around you.

God is on your side!
