GOD SHOWED UP FOR HIM!

Allison Becker, the Liverpool Football Club goalkeeper scored a record-breaking goal this last weekend. Yes, you read it right, the goalkeeper scored a goal! And when he was interviewed, he shared his faith by letting the world know that God showed up for him.

Becker, scored a dramatic header to give his side the much-needed win required to qualify for the Champions League next season. The goal meant Liverpool has a 2-1 win over West Brom. Though a goalkeeper, Becker had headed up the field for a corner in the 5th minute of the added time and from there, he scored the unexpected winning goal.

Becker became the first goalkeeper to have scored a goal off a header in the history of the Premier League. One of the only six goal keepers to have scored and the only one to have ever scored a winning goal.

Why are all these facts necessary?

After the game, Becker was interviewed and he said. “You can’t explain a lot of things in life. For me, the only reason for that kind of thing is God. He put his hand on my head today and I’m feeling really blessed.” What a clear statement of acknowledgement of God showing up for him. Read the interview here .

It is however not a surprise because when he was asked about his faith in a previous interview, he took time to clarify an essential fact.

The reporter asked, “You are evangelical, very religious, and Liverpool have players of varying beliefs. How do these different faiths interact daily?”  to which Becker replied, “I’ll correct it a little. I am not religious, I am a follower of Christ. When we talk about religiosity, it is very much tied to traditions and factors that somewhat tarnish the rich history of Christianity. Jesus is much more than religion,”

What a statement. God in His word said,

‘Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I promised that your branch of the tribe of Levi would always be my priests. But I WILL HONOUR THOSE WHO HONOUR ME, and I will despise those who think lightly of me.’1 Samuel 2:30

There are a few lessons I want to draw out for us from Becker’s life.

  • Continue to grow as a Christian
  • Be a faithful witness with your words and actions
  • Be excellent in what you do and stay diligent.

God cannot but show up for someone with these attributes.

Whether you are into football or not, let’s continue to pray for Allison Becker. Pray that he keep shinning for God as a star and continue to be a witness in Jesus’ name
